Base Build Week 1: We’re Doing this Thing!

Jun 5

After stopping and starting multiple different YouTube channels over the past few years, I’ve finally settled on this idea – creating a space for midlife runners who are attempting a comeback despite the challenges that life has thrown at them. My main reasoning for this? Simple, selfish, accountability. That and a really strong urge to bring more creativity into my life and share my passion for health and wellness with, well, whoever will listen really!

Training Update: Base Build Week 1

If you’re anything like me, you’ll laugh when I say the following … I finally decide to start documenting this running comeback journey and … of course … I flare up my back. I mean, of course I did. I was so careful for the entire week leading up to this one, until the weekend. At which point I decided to move all of my bookshelves by myself (one of my previous YouTube ideas was a booktube channel; that should give you an idea of the quantity of books I moved) and then turn a 3km easy run into an 8km race in the woods with friends. You know what though, I loved every minute of the run and my office looks much better 🙂

Back to the training … with a flared up back I actually took it easy and used my bike trainer on Zwift for most of the week.

Week 1 looked like this:

Infographic summarizing Samantha’s Week 1 5K base build: a recovery-focused week after a back flare, with 12 activities, one 4.92 km run, walking, cycling, yoga, and mobility.
Week 1 was a recovery reset rather than a run-volume week. I completed 12 activities, including one 4.92 km threshold run, six walks, one bike ride, three strength/mobility sessions, and one yoga session. The main win was respecting my flared up back without just turning the full week into rest days!

Where We Go From Here: At Least 5 More Weeks of Base

It’s boring, but it does work. I’ve seen so much positive improvement in all of my health metrics in previous base training phases that I’ve done on the bike. I won’t bore you with those details (unless you ask!), but I’m confident that you’ll see my progress over the next couple of months. Guarantee I also have a few moments of not sticking to this ‘plan’ over those 5 weeks, but I will try my hardest to stick to an 80/20 split of base/zone2 work vs. other fun runs 😉
